The Meaningful Client Ritual Behind Many Moves: did you do this?

Every senior client we meet has built a lifetime of memories.
The hand-written recipes tucked into kitchen drawers. The well-loved armchair where family gathered for stories on countless occasions. The wedding photo displayed proudly for decades.
When families think about a move, they often focus on logistics. Which is very important, of course, a move is full of logistics. But at HUGO, we consider more than just the logistics of a senior move.
We believe that a senior move is also about preserving the feeling of home. A move shouldn't be done in a hasty way, with furniture out of place and belongings in boxes for months. A move should carefully consider the deep, strong roots of the movee (we may have just made up that word, but it works. It means: the one(s) who are moving :)).
That's why at HUGO we don't simply manage moves—we recreate home.
So, in our experience, what does nearly every client do?

Our clients are story-tellers. When we are helping a client curate the furniture and items they would like to bring with them, they often point at an item, pause, and tell us the story of how they procured that beloved belonging: a trip with a spouse, a gift from a child, a painting by a local artist, a hand-me-down chest from a grandparent now passed. They begin a spoken album of their treasures.
And it cannot be rushed.
This processing is part of our process for our clients. We listen, ask questions, and ponder the significance of this beloved item.
You may be thinking: Isn't that a waste of time? Just get on with the move already!
Yes and no. There are certainly deadlines to meet and estimated hours associated with each move. But we honour the stories and treasures of our client with a few minutes here and there where they take us down memory lane. Talking is therapeutic, as we know. Often our clients feel more connected to their move team through sharing stories, and they feel honoured in their transition.
Moving isn't just physical, it's a highly emotional event.
Here's where the stories help our team: our move managers consider the treasured items when floor planning. The worn arm chair that it most loved is given a prominent position, the one-of-a-kind clock by a local artist is displayed where it can be enjoyed, and the especially loved coffee maker is easy to access with a favourite mug within reach.
We pack these things carefully and style them beautifully when we unpack.
These details make for a tailored home. Monica likes to say, we take a boutique approach to a senior move (so, in other words, we aren't a big-box-store in the moving world).
Then something magical happens. When we take the time to understand what matters most, our clients are happier, and they often "hit the ground running" in their new environment because their space boosts their confidence. Their new home is familiar and comfortable from day one. Their favourite items from a lifetime of experiences beautifully arranged.
It so happens that June is Seniors Month and at HUGO and Company we celebrate our clients during every move by honouring their stories, but we'll also take an extra moment to say: we celebrate your resilience, your wisdom, and your history. We thank you for how you draw us into your stories and share the highs and lows that build a great life!
